Kaukauna is one of Wisconsin's oldest Communities. The first white explorer to see Kaukauna was Jean Nicolet, who paddled his birch bark canoe up the Fox River from Green Bay in search of a water passage to the Orient. Nicolet made allies with the Winnebago Indians in the region. Trappers, hunters, missionaries and merchants soon followed with additional expeditions to the new territory.  Because travelers had to carry their boats and cargoes over the three waterfalls at what is now Kaukauna, that spot was destined by nature to become a way-station and settlement on the Fox River waterway.

Today, the City of Kaukauna is a growing community with a variety of wonderful and attractive elements that makes Kaukauna known as "The Friendly City".

The City is home to several manufacturers whose products are known nationwide and provide further diversity to its industrial climate.  The Kaukauna Industrial Park located adjacent to U.S. Highway "41" and with interchanges at State Highway "55" and County Highway "J," is occupied by over 80 businesses which employ approximately 2,200 people. These businesses have benefited from convenient access and visibility to U.S. Highway "41," as well as their central location to both the Green Bay and Fox Cities market areas.

Five public elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and four parochial schools provide for the education of students.  The community is proud of the educational programs for its students and its fine facilities which make Kaukauna one of the finest school districts in the State.

The City of Kaukauna provides ambulance service manned by fire department personnel who are trained paramedics.

The modern, fully equipped fire department has full-time firefighters assisted by paid-on-call firefighters.

The full-time police department is staffed by trained police personnel who provide for the safety and protection of the citizens.

A Mayor, City Council form of government exists in the City of Kaukauna.  City services, including the street department and its garage, are operated from the Municipal Services Building which not only houses all city offices and meeting rooms, but has special rooms for recreational activities and community gatherings.

A modern and well kept park system with a total of 446 acres is complimented by the Doty-Bayorgeon recreation area in which a football field, regulation track, baseball and several softball fields are located.  Adjacent to this recreation area is the Kaukauna Municipal Pool that opened in 1992.  The state-of-the-art pool includes a zero depth feature with diving well, water slide, bathhouse, concession building, sand play area, and a sand volleyball court.

Kaukauna's redeveloped business districts, located on either side of the Fox River, feature businessmen who know the needs of the customers and who take pride in providing personal service and attention.
